The Jazz Bands (Dahlonega Campus and Gaineville Campus) are open to all qualified students by audition, with consideration of the traditional instrumentation required for a large jazz ensemble. These ensembles are dedicated to the study of the music of the great jazz musicians such as Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong. The music is very rewarding and challenges students to play outside their normal repertoire. These ensembles perform both on and off campus throughout the academic year. Opportunities to explore and to develop advanced abilities in jazz improvisation are also a major focus of the Jazz Bands.
The UNG Symphonic Band, conducted by Dr. Ashley Jarrell, is open to all qualified students by audition. The band performs many celebrated genres of music, from contemporary artists such as Eric Whitacre and Frank Ticheli, to traditional pieces by Alfred Reed and Percy Grainger. The music is both challenging and musically rewarding. The UNG Symphonic Band performs both on and off campus throughout the entire academic year. Members of the band are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances and are expected to spend time outside of class perfecting and refining their musical abilities. The UNG Symphonic Band is a resident ensemble on the Gainesville Campus.
